Son of Charles & Ann (née Lee) Coyle. Baptized May 16th, 1836 in Castlepollard, County Westmeath, Ireland. The Coyle family arrived in New York in 1850 and settled on Staten Island. In 1859 Mathew married Margaret Lennan of County Louth, Ireland in New York. Their first two children were born there, the first being a stillborn girl. Traveled overland to California for gold. Staked a claim on Moccasin Creek in Tuolumne County. Had 4 more children. Died of "Miner's Consumption" on his wife's birthday in 1867. Gravestone carved by brother, Hugh Coyle. For some reason dates of birth and death are wrong as evidence by the baptismal record and obituary which is as follows: DIED -- Of Moccasin Creek, Tuolumne County, on Tuesday, the 22nd inst, Mathew Coyle, late of Staten Island, New York, aged about 28 years. Staten Island papers please copy. (The Union Democrat, 26 Jan 1867, p4c7)
