Calvin Bridges was the husband of Abigail P. Leland.

He passed away in Columbia of heart and lung disease at the age of 58.

Bridges, Calvin

Calvin Bridges was born in Holliston, Massachusetts to Calvin Bridges and Achsah Smith. His brothers were Appleton (1802-1837), Willard (1804 -) and Lorenzo (1808 -). His sister was Emmeline (1806 -)

He married Abigail P. Leland in Holliston on May 1, 1837.

Calvin and Abigail had sons, Francis Martin (1837 -) and Edward Granville (1846 – 1856).

The couple were in the area of Nevada City, California, another gold mining town 100 miles or so from Columbia in 1856. Perhaps Calvin went east to bring his family to California and lost their younger son on their way back.

At a more recent time, Jason White of Nevada City, California was looking for organic matter to use for mulching his garden on Round Mountain near his home when he discovered a grave marker with the following inscription:

Abigail doesn't appear on the 1870 census as far as I have been able to tell. Their son, Francis, was living in Chicago that year. More about him later.

In 1880, Abigail claimed herself to be widowed. She was living in Washington, Yolo County, California, with her sister, Helen Green, niece, Jennie T. Green and brother-in-law, William M. Green. William was a saloon keeper. There were several people boarding with the family.

Calvin descends from John Leland of Yorkshire, England, 1555 – 1646.

Calvin and Abigail's son, Francis, was born October 24, 1837, in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. He married Mary Eastman in 1868. The couple had three sons, Robert Sumner Bridges (1870 – 1871), Francis Eastman Bridges, (1872 –) and Lyman Albert Bridges (1881 – 1954)

In 1870, Calvin and Abigail's son, Francis was working as a sewer pipe agent in Chicago. Mary was keeping house. They had a servant, Bridget O'Neil, living with them.
