Katie Hines, daughter of Irish immigrants Frank Hines and Mary Shields Hines, was born in Allentown,Pa.in April of 1879. Then later on about 1884 or so the Hines family moved to Philadelphia,Pa. There she attended St.Francis Xavier grade school. Katie entered the Convent on October 15,1900. She received her first Habit on January 2,1901; first vows February 24, 1903; final vows July 27,1915. Her fist mission station was at Bonneauville in 1902. She was stationed at Gesu, St.Francis DeSales, Villa Maria (Immaculata and West Chester)Holy Spirit(Asbury Park) St.Madeline(Ridley Park )25 yrs. Sister Maurus was well loved and respected wherever she went and will always be remembered and always missed by all the people whose lives she touched.

Some of the things other Sisters said about Sister Mary Maurus:
"Although Sister was assigned to Household work, she was very important in the school activities of St.Madeline Parish.Until 1948,the school was housed in the same building as the convent. This gave Sister an opportunity to know the children and they to know this holy, pleasant Sister. Many discouraged a little at music continued his or her practice because of Sister's cheery manner and encouragement.Sister's charm was not only for the children but also for their parents.
"No matter how tired we were after school,Sister always affected a feeling of good will in us.Her little surprises on a Feast Day,or a trick,a joke, and when a Sister was illsuch loving care.
"Sister spent her life for God,our Community, and the Sisters with whom she lived at the time.Visitors to the convent remembered her courtesy and thoughtfulness. One Sister, who as entering as a postulant,on her way to West Chester broke her foot.Happily Sister was there to take care of her."

"I consider it an honor to be sent to the convent for three and a half years where i would live and appreciate Sister Maurus. She gave a beautiful example of loving care, simplicity, and prayerfulness to all in the convent.Humility and humor are said to be her twin virtues. She was a treasure in the house. She was loved by everyone who came to the house, especially in Ridley Park where she served God and his children for over twenty five years."

"If ever anyone taught about God and his love for all his creatures it was dear Sister Maurus.Later, the school was a few blocks away and there was not a child who did not know Sister.Perhaps her pleasant manner and little jokes kept Sister young. When we returned from school on Mondays the wash was folded and the ironing finished and a little surprise on the table."

"I have always felt that Sister Maurus was special and those Sisters who lived with her were fortunate.I,too, was fortunate. My closeness to her began when she placed me on the altar. She had a feeling for me and so through the years i had love and admiration for her. This feeling grew and i became a "Sister".I could understand the great person Sister really was and appreciate her value and closeness to God.She was the personifiction of those lines,"Let me grow lovrly, growing old".
Sister Bernard Marie

"We could never pin Sister Maurus down on the number of years she spent at St.Madeline's,Ridley Park. But we knew she was there long enough to be loved by the children and the children's children.
:Sister Maurus, who was the housekeeper, referred to the beginning of the school year as the time when"her boys went back to college' and her vacation began.
"Before my time in Ridley Park the Sisters told me that Sister Maurus often surprised the Sisters by having all their charges finished when they came home from school on friday afternoon. She always hid a special treat that she would make for supper and be triumphant when she 'pulled something over on us'...like a Strawberry Shortcake or cinnamon buns.
"Gradually, as age and ill health claimed Sister, she graciously relinquished her extra charges but was never too tired to sit by the window, the coffee perking on the stove, with a ready welcome to the 'boys' as they wearily trekked 'home from college."

"Sister was a very prayweful religious. She liked especially to stay in the Chapel in the dark each night after supper and it seemed a case of her"looking at him and he at her".

"Sister was confided in by young and old, Superior and Sister. All were intuitively aware of her quiet, unassuming wisdom. Sister Maurus lived religiously, grew old serenely and died without being a burden to anyone."
Sister Ann Maureen

Sister died April 26,1955, at the Villa Maria, West Chester shortly after 2:00am on the feast of Our Mother of Good Counsel; her Rosary, the inseparable companion of her illness, was still twined around her hand. Sister passed to her eternal reward as peacefully and tranquilly as she lived, never a complaint, never a sigh, no external expression of her suffering. Her characteristic traits of kindliness and thoughtfulness of others were evidenced in many little ways. When the nurses would inquire how she felt, instead of answering for herself, Sister would invariably say "How do you feel?" Even when she could no longer speak, from every little service, her lips formed the words "Thank you."

"EULOGY"
During all the fifty-five years of her religious life, her sympathetic kindness and cheerful disposition were a source of inspiration and encouragement to all who came in contact with her. In expressing his sympathy on the occasion of "Sisters death, Father John Walsh, Pastor of St.Denis Church, Manaasqua ,N.J.wrote: "Sister Maurus' death recalls many happy memories of Asbury Park and my association with the fine group of Immaculate Heart nuns. God rest the souls who have died .God bless all who remain to do his will until He calls tehm."May her soul rest in peace!"
