A native of the Oxford Circle section of Philadelphia, she was the daughter of Joseph Aloysius Feighan and Mary McIlbaile. Her siblings were Dr. Joseph A. Feighan; John Feighan; and Edward Feighan. Sister Feighan graduated from Little Flower High School for Girls where she was first flutist in the school orchestra. She entered the convent in 1950 and professed her vows with the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1953.
Before joining the Immaculata staff, she taught at parochial schools in Delaware and Chester Counties and in Harrisburg. Sister Maria taught at parish schools of St. Louis, in Yeadon, St. Mary in Coaldale, St. Joseph, in Downingtown, St. Bernard, in Easton and St. Laurence, in Highland Park, Delaware County. She also taught at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg. She received her bachelor's degree from Immaculata in 1964, her master's degree in education from Harvard in 1967 and her doctorate in physical chemistry from St. Louis University in 1969.
She spent the last 23 years on the Immaculata faculty. She was a member of the Philadelphia chapter of the American Chemical Society.
