Miss Marie Donahue, daughter of Edward and Ellen Hines Donahue, was born in Philadelphia on March 7, 1899. She was raised in St. Francis Xavier Parish where she received her sacraments and attended St. Francis Xavier School(Fairmount section now the Art Museum area) where she was taught by IHMs, and completed her elementary education in 1913. She then began her secondary education at Catholic Girls High School(later named John W.Hallahan), 1913-1916, before graduating from Villa Maria Academy, Immaculata, PA 1917-1919.

Marie was one of twenty-three excited young women who entered the convent at Villa Maria, West Chester on July 2, 1920. Marie had arrived early and was the second postulant to be welcomed to her new home. Marie and her "band" received the habit of religion on December 27, 1920 where she was given the name Sister Philomena Marie. First Vows were profess on December 27, 1922; Final Profession was made August 15, 1925.

Immediately after her profession of vows Sister Philomena hurriedly packed her things and prepared to meet her students at St. Teresa of Avila parish, located at 751 South Broad Street in Philadelphia. During her six months there, January to June 1922, Sister Philomena taught grades three and four, as well as seventh and eighth. She then "took a tour" of two of our missions, spending just one month at Seven Dolors, Wyndmoor with grades six, seven, and eight before reporting to St. Mark, Bristol remaining there four months teaching grades two and three. She finally found roots at St. Paul, Philadelphia over the next 3 1/2 years, 1923-1926, teaching grades seven and eight.

The remainder of Sister's tenure in the ministry of education was spent in a number of high shcools. The years 1926-1938 were busy ones as she reported to St. Jerome, Tamaqua; Villa Maria, Falls Church, VA; Immaculate Conception, Tremont as well as a return to St. Jerome, Tamaqua before "settling in" at St. Stephen, Port Carbon for four years, 1934-1938. At each of these missions, Sister Philomena was engaged in secondary education and at the same time was continuing her own education, receiving her A.B. from Immaculata College in 1931 with certification in Englihs, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. She then continued her education in Villanova, earning her M.A. in English in 1942.

Sister Philomena returned to the environs of Philadelphia for a short while, as she was missioned to Immaculate Conception and St. Vincent's Annex for 1 1/2 years. She then visited the areas of upstate Pennsylvania as she successively reported to St. Peter, Reading, 1940-1946, Our Lady, Mount Carmel, 1946-1950, (where she celebrated h er Silver Jubilee on the exact date of her first profession of vows) and Annunciation, Shenandoah, 1950-1954. During her tenure at St. Peter, Our Lady Carmel and Annuciation Sister Philomena had varied rosters that included: Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Drawing, Latin 3 & 4, French 2 & 3, English 4, and Religion.

In 1954 Sister Philomena Maria's health issues necessitated her admission to Villa Maria Infirmary where she remained until 1957. She then returned to her mininstry in education at Most Blessed Sacrament where she taught 9th grade. Her next assignment was to Archbishop Prendergast High School, Drexel Hill where she continued teacing Physical Science and General Science throughout 1958-1966.
