Humberto had been living in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico when he entered the service. His tour start date was March 18, 1968.

Staff Sergeant Acosta-Rosario was a machine gunner with B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25 Infantry Division.

On August 22, 1968, he was on reconnaissance near the Ben Cui rubber plantation, Tay Ninh Province, South Korea. When his unit came under fire he was listed as Missing in Action. His casualty date is listed as March 1, 1978, with the report date as March 6, 1978.

His remains were never recovered.

His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.

He is buried in Puerto RIce National Cemetery in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
