The son of Isaac H Chandler and Alice (Armstrong) Chandler. A soldier in the Civil War, he was in Company H, 170th Ohio Infantry. He was first married to Elizabeth Morris in 1861. John and Elizabeth had two sons, William "Willie" and Thomas Eldridge. After Elizabeth died in 1866, he was remarried in 1870 to Margaret Ann (Reynolds) Chandler. John and Margaret had two children: Bertha and Lou Edna Chandler. Bertha died in infancy. Lou Edna lived until 1949 and apparently never married.
