The funeral of J. B. Addis, who died at his residence at 324 South Eleventh Street, Neodesha, Thursday morning, August 26, 1915, at 6:30, was held at the Meineke chapel at 10 a.m. last Friday, conducted by Elder F. L. Pettit of the Christian church. Burial was made by Humphrey Post G. A. R. The pall bearers were R. M. Jones, D. C. Bodine, Dr. T. B. Blakeslee, G. K. Sipple and Wm. Martinson, all old soldiers.
J. B. Addis was born in New Jersey in 1830 and at the age of about 20, in 1850, came to Kansas and settled on the Neosho river, in what is now Neosho county. He was married there to Miss Henrietta Lewark. Later they moved to Indiana and then to Missouri. When the war broke out Addis came into Kansas and became a member of the famous 12th Kansas regiment, Company K.
At the close of the war Mr. Addis came back to Kansas and engaged in general merchandising at Olathe in partnership with his brother. His wife, who had been in Indiana during the war, refused to come to Kansas and they never lived together afterward.
In about 1866 Mr. Addis came to Wilson county, Kansas, stopping a few months, then going to Montgomery County, four and one half miles this side of Independence, where his father joined him from Olathe and resided until his death. J. B. Addis, after a few years residence in Montgomery County, came back to Wilson County and settled on a farm nine miles west of Neodesha, where, March 11, 1876, he was married to Miss Sarah A. Norton, a sister of Mrs. Morscher of that vicinity. She survives him. Mr. Addis was the father of four children as a result of his first marriage, one of whom, a daughter, Mrs. Eliza Tullis, lived at Ness City, Kansas. She was here during the last illness and his death.
Though he lived to a ripe old age, Mr. Addis has been a constant sufferer since the close of the war. Largely the result of exposure and a sun stroke, his mind had been gradually weakening for years.
Mr. Addis was a Christian most all his life and a firm believer in the religion of Jesus Christ and died in the faith. He was a member of the Christian church.
