Mr. Barnes, age 81, of Matthews, died peacefully Saturday, January 3, 2009 at his residence. Born March 16, 1927 in Franklin County, VA, he was one of eleven children born to the late Vester Lee Barnes and Mary Irabell Gibson Barnes. Mr. Barnes served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He retired as owner of Barnes Distributors.
The service to celebrate the life of J.B. Barnes will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, January 6, 2009 from the graveside at Sunset Memory Gardens with The Reverend Ed Thompson, officiating. The family will receive friends 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM Monday at McEwen Funeral Service - Mint Hill Chapel.
Survivors include 4 children, Joyce Simpson and her husband, Howard, of Mint Hill, Jay Barnes and his wife, Jane, of Walhalla, SC, Debbie Sluder and her husband, Carl, of Morven and Sherry Cable of Mint Hill; son-in-law, Bud Gusler; daughter-in-law, Candy Barnes; 9 grandchildren, Becky Woolrich, Jennifer Simpson, Jason Barnes, Shanna Barnes, Tera Waddell, Tony Barnes, Amanda Thompson, Angela Connell and Josh Cable; 17 great grandchildren; and 4 siblings, Chester Barnes, Christine Clemons, Irene Cox and Eva Joyce.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his loving wife, Gladys Barnes; 2 children, Wayne Barnes and Cynthia Barnes Gusler; and son-in-law, Buddy Cable.
