Son of Augustus Appleton Jones & Mary Partridge. Enlisted in the Union army at age 23 on August 29, 1862, initially as a Sergeant with Co.F, 44th Massachusetts Infantry, and later with the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, in companies D & E. Promoted twice in May of 1863, to 1st Lieutenant on the 16th and to Captain on the 25th. The 54th, under the command of Col. Robert Gould Shaw, spearheaded the attack on Fort Wagner on July 18, 1863, a Federal loss in which Shaw was killed. Jones sustained a shoulder wound in the battle, the effects of which led to his discharge on December 16, 1864. After the war, he served as Sergeant-at-Arms in the Senate of Ohio. He died aged 46 from the effects of his war wound, and was survived by his widow, Margaret A. Jones. He is among the white officers honored with a plaque on the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington DC (plaque E-154).
