Alexander Thomas Elliott was the son of Isaac Elliott and Anna Huff of Guilford and Randolph Counties, NC. They were Quakers.

Alexander attended the New Garden Boarding School (later became Guilford College) as a young man. New Garden Guilford College is the only Quaker founded college in the southeastern United States.

Alexander moved to the Charleston,SC area where he met and married JoAnna Przyborowski, and converted to her Methodist denomination. They moved to Henderson County, NC and raised their family there. Alexander donated the land for Moores Grove Methodist Church.
