Mr. Sawyer was born January 6, 1915 in Hickory, North Carolina, a son of the late George L. Sawyer , Sr. and Eula Pearl Summey Sawyer . He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II where he was Master Sergeant and also a weather forecaster. He received his Masters from Appalachian State Teachers College following the war. Mr. Sawyer taught biology and science in the North Carolina Public School system, in the Charlotte area, he taught at Central High School and later at Garinger High School where he retired after 43 years in 1979. During his career he also served as a Tennis Coach.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of George Sawyer will be held 3:30 PM Thursday, March 8, 2001 from the Charlotte Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service with The Reverend Martha Jane Raedel, interim pastor of Third Presbyterian Church, officiating. Inurnment will follow in Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Cornelius, NC. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:30 until 3:30 PM at the Charlotte Chapel.
Mr. Sawyer is survived by his beloved wife, of 58 years, Nancy Potts Sawyer of Charlotte; daughter, Kathryn S. Hammond and her husband, Jerry Wayne Hammond of Concord; son, Kenneth M. Sawyer of California; one granddaughter, Jennifer Elaine Hammond of Washington, DC; brother, Karl S. Sawyer , Sr. of Charlotte; one cousin, Rebecca Randolph of Woodberry, VA; 2 nephews and 2 nieces.
