Oliver (John) Thomas, a 66-year-old resident of Columbia, died yesterday in a San Francisco hospital. Mr. Thomas was employed as caretaker at the county's Columbia garbage dump. He was a native of San Antonio, Texas, and a veteran of World War I. He had lived in California for 45 years and moved to Tuolumne county 30 years ago. Survivors include a son, William Thomas of Quincy; a daughter, Lois Cook of Fort Bragg; two brothers, Lafe Thomas of Kansas and Earl Thomas of Texas, and a sister who resides in New Mexico. He also leaves six grandchildren. Funeral services are pending at Heuton Memorial chapel.

Mr. Thomas was born in San Antonio Texas. As a young man, he lived in Kansas where he worked for a paving company before joining in World War I.

Mr. Thomas had been a resident of Tuolumne County for 30 years when he passed away in a San Francisco hospital following an extended illness. He had been employed as a caretaker of the county's Columbia garbage dump. By the end of the 20th century, the dump site had been plowed under and redesigned into a public park.

Final rites for Mr. Thomas were conducted on a Friday afternoon at the Heuton Memorial chapel under the auspices of the Smyth-Bolter American Legion post. Interment was in the Columbia City Cemetery.

Survivors included a son, William, of Quincy, California; a daughter, Lois Cook of Fort Bragg; two brothers, Lafe of Kansas and Earl of Texas; a sister who resided in New Mexico; and six grandchildren.

Oliver "John" Thomas had brown eyes and dark brown hair, was of medium height and stout in build. His mother's maiden name was Leach.
