George was the son of George Washington Childress, Sr. and Gertrude Augusta Womack. He was the younger brother of Evie, Gordon, Scott and Josephine.
On December 31, 1918, George's father passed away. Gertrude was left pregnant with George and four other children to raise. That left her with the only reasonable option of moving back to Carr Avenue, Walker, Garvin County, Oklahoma to live with her parents, Mancell and Josephine Womack.
From that time on, life was difficult for Gertrude and her children. Although she had a newborn baby – George – she had to work as a farm laborer along with her children, Evie and Gordon. Instead of going to school, the children had to work.
Eventually the family lived at Middleburg in Grady County, Oklahoma where they rented and worked a farm. George and Josephine were allowed to attend school, and George completed high school.

However, he was called to duty for World War II. On October 18, 1944, George traveled across the bay to San Francisco and registered. He served as an Army Private.
