Herman Betts Benedict, born June 19, 1809 in Otsego county, state of New York. At the age of 20 moved to Ohio. In 18?7 came west to Boonville, Mo., where he was Mayor for four or five terms; served as President of the Council and Councilman. He also filled many responsible places in the city's affairs. Here he remained until 1878 then going to Los Angeles, Cal., where he has made his home. He has made yearly visits to old Booneville. His last visit there was enjoyed by him, returning December 8, 1888 to California, when a long spell of sickness attacked him and his life was despaired of two or three times, but he was spared until Friday at 9 a.m. November 8, 1889, when he died at the age of 80 years, 4 months and 19 days.
