M. Maxine Gustafson, 98, of 1994 Baird Ave., Galesburg, Ill., formerly of Dahinda, Ill., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2006, at 10:43 p.m. at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg, Ill.

She was born on April 26, 1908, in London Mills, Ill., the daughter of Durward and Nellie McCoy Jones.

She married Marvin Essex on Dec. 24, 1929, in Knoxville, Ill. He preceded her in death in September 1957. She later married Floyd V. Gustafson on Aug. 6, 1960, in Knoxville, Ill. He preceded her in death on April 14, 1990.

Surviving are two daughters, Myrna (Merritt) Johnson of Wataga, Ill., and Maureen (Larry) Braden of Bartonville, Ill.; one son, Marvin Sonny (Helen) Essex of Knoxville, Ill.; foster daughter, Kay Cecil of Des Moines, Iowa; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters; and numerous stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded by one daughter, Donna Marlene Essex; one grandson, Mark Johnson; and one sister.

She was raised and educated in London Mills, Ill., attending the Fairmound Grade School. She graduated from the London Mills High School. She then attended the Lombard College in Galesburg, Ill., for two years, receiving her teaching degree.

She was a homemaker and taught school at the one-room Glisson Elementary School in rural Knoxville and later at the Yates City Elementary School.

She was a member of the Dahinda United Methodist Church in Dahinda, Ill., the Delta Zeta Sorority at Lombard College in Galesburg, Ill., and the Appleton Country Club.

She and her husband traveled in 37 countries and gave slide programs to local groups.

She had a green thumb and loved flowers. She was adept at modifying recipes. She had a love for dogs, love for family gatherings and promoted them and always had the coffeepot on. She and her husband loved to play pitch.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. at Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Ill., with Deacon Jim Haneghan officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Knoxville Cemetery in Knoxville, Ill.
