Charles grew up as the middle child with seven full brothers and sisters. He also had eight half-brothers and -sisters by his father's first marriage to Matilda Miller Eaton.
On October 22, 1903, when he was just past his 28th birthday and she was just past her 21st birthday, Charles married Vivian Charity Moore. Vivian was the daughter of Norman L. Moore and his second wife Laura Jane Dawson Moore. The couple had their first child in 1904, naming her Jewell Vivian Eaton. In 1905 they had their second child whom they named Ritner Charles Eaton.
A tragic accident occurred on October 11, 1905, which was, ironically, Charles's 30th birthday. On that fateful day, Charles was a railroad engineer for a Frisco work train that had come to a stop on a spur on the track. Another work train collided with Charles's; and he was thrown out of the cab. He fell between the two engines and was badly scalded by escaping steam. He died about 12 hours later.
Charles was buried in the Neodesha City Cemetery by his grieving young widow and children.
