Albert T. "Buddy" Abadie, owner, founder and president of Neon Specialties Inc., he was born Nov. 27, 1924, in New Orleans, and was a longtime resident of Baton Rouge. He passed away peacefully in the presence of his family after a lengthy battle with cancer at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at the Hospice Butterfly Wing.
During his 83 years, Buddy lived and marked his life with his love of the art and creation of neon signs, many of which continue to light the city of Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. He was the subject of numerous television features, newspaper articles and interviews due to the magnitude of the unique skills he possessed. Buddy served during World War II as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, participating in D-Day, the invasion of France, the Battle of the Bulge and many other campaigns. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Certificate of Appreciation from the French government for the liberation of France and several other honors. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Masonic Lodge 372.
He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Otto Abadie; mother, Geralda Larcade Abadie; stepmother, Leona Dragon Abadie; brothers, Jack A., Guy L. and Ray J. Abadie; sister-in-law, Evelyn B. Abadie; niece, Deborah Carmack Thurston; and nephew, Steven Abadie.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ruth Carney Abadie; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael T. and Diane C. Abadie and Kevin and Cindy Souther Abadie; daughter-in-law, Peggy P. Abadie; grandchildren, Blake, Ashlyn, Brett and Whitney; great-granddaughter, Ana Vo; stepgrandsons, Cameron and Chad Pyle; brother, William "Bill" Abadie; sisters, Jean A. Carmack and June A. Munster; sisters-in-law, Nevolin "Bootsie" Abadie, Betty Abadie and Carol Abadie; and many loved nieces and nephews.
