Brother Robert Jules Adams BFSC

"Robert Jules Adams had attended and graduated from Cathedral High School in Lafayette in 1939. He was a member of the football and boxing teams and boxed as a feather weight champion. The Christian Brothers, particularly those from De La Salle, influenced his life profoundly and he remained loyally devoted to them and their teachings throughout his life. While in high school, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. After high school, he attended SLI, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, until he joined the United States Navy in 1942. After his service in WWII, he returned to Lafayette and SLI in 1946 then went on to Tulane Law School, in New Orleans, where he graduated in 1949 and practiced law in Lafayette for over 50 years. During WWII, Mr. Adams was one of only 15 US Navy pilots awarded the distinct honor of flying with Britain's Royal Air Force for the 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy. According to historical accounts of the day, he was the first American pilot to land during the invasion. He flew 13 sorties on D-Day. He also participated in the August,1944 invasion of southern France. He received US Naval Air Metals for both campaigns. He was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the American Theatre, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbons with two Stars. After WWII was over, Mr. Adams and his wife, Maude Alma 'Ski' [Johnson] Adams, returned to Lafayette to raise their family and where he began his law practice. Robert and Maude had four children, Robert D, James J., Barbara E and Mary. He served as an assistant city attorney under Rayburn Bertrand and was a member of both the Lafayette and Louisiana Bar Association. No cause was ever near and dearer to Mr. Adams than the needs of the De La Salle Christian Brothers. He was an avid fundraiser for them for many years and served as their local attorney. In fact, so diligently did he work for their cause, he was one of only two lay people honored by the order in a special ceremony [1972]." Brother Jules Adams BFSC died on April 14, 2010, peacefully at his home in Lafayette at age eighty-eight. A Mass of Christian Burial was held in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette, and he was interred at Calvary Cemetery. He and Maude, "Ski" had been married for sixty-six years. Brother Robert Julius Adams was recommended to the Superior General and his Council in Rome for Letters of Benefaction to the De La Salle Christian Brothers by the Brothers of the Winona District. (While the year of the granting of the Letters of Benefaction (BFSC) is known [1972] the month and day are not. Therefore, we have chosen January 1st as the day on which this Brother is memorialized/remembered in our prayers.
