Roy J. Amos, 90, of Muscle Shoals, passed away on September 6, 2014 at Shoals Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents; John and Myrtle Roberts Amos; and an infant son. Colbert Memorial Chapel will be directing the services. Visitation will be at Colbert Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 from 1pm – 3pm, with the service to follow at 3pm. Reverend Carol Lambert, pastor of Muscle Shoals First United Methodist Church, will hold the memorial service in celebration of Roy’s life.
Mr. Amos is survived by his best friend, and loving wife of 37 years, Mary Underwood Amos; his children and his wife’s children, Mary Ann Thomas, Betty Jo Broadfoot (Joe), Richard McNatt, and Susan Sherrill (Stanley), all of Muscle Shoals; grandchildren, Skylar Thomas, Garrett Thomas, Blaine Broadfoot, Eric Broadfoot, Tanner Broadfoot, Rebecca Sherrill, Wes Sherrill, Ricky McNatt and Jennifer McNatt; great grandchildren, Caden, Collin, and Brayden; sister, Marie Thompson (Charles); brothers, Elton Amos (Carol) and Billy Amos (Gail); and his caregiver and very special friend, Debra Batty.
Mr. Amos was a Colbert County native. He attended Mississippi State College while serving in the Air Force during World War II. He was a charter member of Muscle Shoals First United Methodist Church, having assisted in the organization and building of the church in 1961. He was an active member and served in various church positions and committees since that time.
He was a contractor and owned Amos Construction Co. until his retirement. He was active in the ongoing development of Muscle Shoals City and this area, serving in various municipal positions. As president of Highland Park Realty Co., he developed the Avalon Industrial Park and was instrumental in the development of Southgate Mall.
Mr. Amos enjoyed life, and avidly pursued hobbies, including reading, boating, camping, clubs, and traveling extensively in his motor home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of their choice.
