C.H. CASSIDY LONG ACTIVE IN CITY, DIES

Former Altoona Councilman, Contractor, Expires After Two Years' Illness.

Charles H. Cassidy, aged 72, of 2814 Broad avenue, former city official and long identified with the business life of the city as a building contractor, died at his home at 12.30 o'clock this afternoon after having been ill for the past two years.

While not in good health Mr. Cassidy had been able to be about until last Monday afternoon when he was stricken at his home, his condition having been regarded as critical since. He had suffered from a heart ailment, later complicated by a stroke.

Native of City.

Charles Henry Cassidy was a lifelong resident of Altoona, having been born in the vicinity of Ninth avenue and Thirteenth street on Sept. 12, 1868. His parents were William and Ann (Shaw) Cassidy, who moved to Altoona from Newry in 1867.

During his childhood his parents occupied for a time one of the log houses which formerly stood at Allegheny Furnace, but later moved to 2904 Sixth avenue, where he spent his boyhood.

He learned the carpenter trade, beginning his apprenticeship when he was 17 years old, with the contracting firm of J.A. Elder and John Kaup, the former being a brother-in-law. In the year following the completion of his trade he entered into a partnership with Mr. Elder, the firm being known as Elder & Cassidy.

Establishes Business.

After several years in the company, Mr. Cassidy withdrew and established his own lumber yard and carpenter shop at 2903 West Chestnut avenue, Mr. Elder entering the planing mill business, and for a period of about fifteen years conducted a general contracting and building business.

About 1908, Mr. Cassidy again formed a partnership with Mr. Elder, the firm purchasing the William Stokes mill and yard at Margaret avenue and Twentieth street. Some years later they sold the property to the city for its present use as the city yard and erected a new planing mill and lumber yard at Beale avenue and Twenty-sixth street.

On the withdrawal of Mr. Elder from the partnership, Warren Stokes joined with Mr. Cassidy in the operation of the business. After Mr. Stokes' death, Mr. Cassidy continued alone until the destruction of the J.B. Fluke & Sons mill at Fifth avenue and Twenty-fifth street by fire in 1920, when Mr. Cassidy sold the mill to the Fluke company, although continuing in the general contracting business.

Elected Councilman.

Mr. Cassidy's election to the position of city councilman on Nov. 5, 1935, was his fourth to an administrative office in the city government. He first served the city as a member of the common council from the Twelfth ward for one term, from 1911 to 1913.

In the fall of 1917 he was elected as a city commissioner, along with N.A. Stevens, W.C. Westfall and John P. Lafferty, taking office on Jan. 1, 1918, under the city manager form of government. Both he and Mr. Stevens were reelected for four-year terms in 1919, but served only two years of their second terms, resigning on Jan. 2, 1922, when their associates in council under the commission-manager plan, W.C. Westfall and John P. Lafferty, failed of reelection.

Earlier, during the second term of Mayor S.M. Hoyer, Mr. Cassidy served for a four-year period in the appointive office of park commissioner, along with William F. Gable and Emil Engleman.

Active in B. & L. Work.

Mr. Cassidy was active in building and loan association work in the city for many years, being a charter member of the Union association and a member of the Economy association since a few years after its organization. He had served as director and later held the presidencies of both organizations. He was one of the first directors of the Blair County Building and Loan league.

He was also a charter member of the Altoona club of Rotary International and has served as its president. He became a member of the Spruce Creek Rod and Gun club shortly after its organization. For five years he held the office of president of the club.

On June 14, 1887, Mr. Cassidy was united in marriage with Miss Laura M. Haas of Allegheny Furnace. Surviving are Mrs. Cassidy, ten sons and daughters, Miss Nora, at home, A. Boyd and J. Clyde Cassidy of the city, C. Ralph Cassidy of Carson valley, Arthur B. Cassidy and Mrs. G.C. Mays of the city, John S. of Carson valley, Miss Ruth at home, and Mrs. D. James Simpson of Maplewood, N.J., and Robert W. Cassidy of Altoona.

In addition there are eight grandchildren and two brothers, P. Shunk Cassidy and W. Blair Cassidy, all of the city.

Mr. Cassidy was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church.

Friends will be received at the Lafferty Funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening.
