Ida finished her education in Hilda, took her teacher's training and taught at various schools in the Hilda area, New Hilda, Mantz, Maple Tree, and Rolly Point during 1936-1943.
The Stockburgers put up a tent on their farm which was close to the Mantz School, and revival meeting were held in it. Ida accepted the Lord as her Saviour and wanted to become a missionary. To that end she attended Prairie Bible Institute in Three Hills, Alberta in 1943-45. We were just speaking to Alice (Lietke) Kierstead, a missionary for many years; she was Ida's room-mate when she attended Three Hills. Alice was telling us that Ida was very hard on herself and very exact about following any rules or Biblical instruction, she also said Ida was a woman of prayer.
As I read her diary many years ago, I realized it took a long time for her to be trained and accepted as a missionary to Africa. She was in Toronto for some time and in the States.
In June 1946 (Ken remembers the strawberries were ripe), Ida and Elsie came to B.C. for a visit just before Ida was leaving for Africa. Elsie spent several weeks sewing a wardrobe for Ida for the 5-year stint which was the normal period of time. Mom Ida was good at making patterns after seeing a dress in the catalogue, and Frieda was the same size as Ida, so she could also try the clothes on. Frieda says her mom sewed a dress for Ida after she left and sent it to Africa for her. George sent a telegram saying he had cut himself, got blood poisoning - it went up his arm, so Elsie had to leave for home sooner than she wished to.
Ida left for Africa by steamer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was only in the Gold Coast, Africa for a short period of time. Ida wrote her dad a letter saying she had met a Greek missionary and he wanted her to marry him. Her dad did not think too much of this idea! I have pictures she sent home of devil dancers, stories told by her with flannel-graph, their straw covered mud huts, and photos of Africans in their native garb.
She was bitten by a mosquito and contracted malaria. Cybil, one of Ida's co-workers wrote a letter saying Ida had been bitten by an insect, she had a sore foot, and the infection had spread. One day they found Ida confused and walking in the heat of the sun without her helmet on. She was sent to London for treatment, but to no avail. She passed away July 7, 1947 due to malaria complications at the age of 30, and was buried in a cemetery in Greater London (Grave #20920, Crystal Palace District Cemetery, Elmers End Road, Beckenham, Kent, UK).
