Funeral services for Megan Elizabeth Brittain, 12, will be at 11 a.m. today at the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, 230 Seventh St. N.E., with the Rev. Dr. Derek Staples and the Rev. David Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Hokes Bluff Cemetery. K.L. Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Center will be directing services.

Megan died at Children's Hospital in Birmingham on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, after an extended battle with cancer. She is survived by her father, Gary; two brothers, Ian and Bradley, all of Jacksonville; her grandparents, Edna Brittain, Hokes Bluff, and Fred and Lamona (Hunter) Easterwood Jr., Cullman; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Sharon Easterwood Brittain.

Megan was a student at Kitty Stone Elementary in Jacksonville where she served this past year as student council president. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville where she was active in Sunday School, AWANA and children's choir. She enjoyed sports, especially softball and basketball. Since her diagnosis with cancer, Megan has been active in raising funds for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life and has been a spokesperson for blood donations through the American Red Cross.

Our desire is to remember Megan in a way that makes a difference in other children's lives. We respectfully request that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital, Megan Brittain Memorial Fund, Division of Pediatric Oncology, 1600 7th Ave. S., Birmingham, AL 35233.
