William was placed on an "Orphan Train" which left New York City on June 30, 1857 on Mr. C.C. Tracy's 6th Company to Michigan. The train manifest states "age 5," (sic) also that he was Irish, protestant, and that his mother and father had deserted him. William arrived with numerous other children at Albion, Michigan, where he was taken in by Eli Balcome & wife. They eventually adopted him. An 1881 published report by Charles R. Fry, Appendix pg. 71 states, "Wm. G, age 5 when placed with Eli B., of Albion, Mich, in 1857, is there yet. He is an intelligent and well educated young man, who speaks in the highest terms of his foster-parents, and is himself well thought of by all who know him. He is married, has learned the trade of a moulder, has steady employment and is doing well." The 1885 Albion City Diretory lists William as a molder at the Gale Manufacturing Company.
