James enlisted in the army on 12 November 1858 and was sent to India with 104th Regiment of Foot Bengal Fusiliers. in 1862 he was in Meerut East Indies. the Regt returned to England in 1871 and in 1877 they went to Ireland where he attained the rank of sergeant in the Royal Munster Regt (an amalgamation with the 101st Regt of Foot Royal Bengal Fusiliers) Whilst there he met Johanna Reardon and they married. They had two sons, James Joseph and William Edward followed by two daughters Lilian and Florence. When James left the Army the family settled in Malta where he was a publican in Valetta. He died in 1911
