OBITUARY:
Fatal Accident--George Adkins--About noon last Thursday, George Adkins was fatally injured in the William coal mine, three miles east of town. He had put in two blasts and only one going off, he returned and while on the spot the second explosion occurred mutilating him in a terrible manner. His legs were broken, also one wrist and arm, His body lacerated and his eyes destroyed. Drs. Helton and Phillips went to him as quickly as possible and he was brought to his home on east High Street this city. One leg was amputated the next morning and he died a few minutes later, about 24 hours after the accident. He was conscious to the last and bore up with splendid nerve. The funeral occurred Sunday at Friends Church. Rev. Brown officiating and he was buried in Highland Cemetery.

The deceased was born in Larkin, Illinois, April 18, 1858. died October 2, 1908. He married Harriet Newlin of Joplin, Illinois, Sept 18, 1877, she dying January 2, 1902. There are five children; Ora, Ira, Cora, Jacob and George. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Abner Adkins of Union Township and for them and all who mourn great sympathy is expressed. This is the first fatality ever occurring at these mines.
