Derek was the son of television producer and writer Stephen J. Cannell and his wife Marcia. Derek was the apple of his father's eye and had worked the previous summer at father's office as an intern. He was visiting friends in San Luis Obispo, gone to the beach and was digging a giant fortress when the sand suddenly collapsed. Derek died from suffocation. Besides his parents, he was survived by his brother Cody and two sisters, Tawnia and Chelsea.
