Hello friends;
In 1808 Alexander Neill first became a director in the Hagerstown Bank. He served that year and again from 1812 to 1830. From 1833 to 1835 he was director on the part of the state. In 1839 he was elected president of the bank, succeeding Ohio Lawrence. He held the office continuously until his death in 1851.
Alexander Neill was the son of William Neill and grandson of Adam and Janet Holmes Neill. William was born in 1754 in County Antrim, Ireland. He came to America about 1770 with two brothers.
William settled in Baltimore and married Isabella Callender. He became a prominent and successful merchant and took and active part in civic affairs of the city. He is mentioned in the history of the city and in the American Archives.
Among their children was a son Alexander, who was born December 22, 1778. He grew up in Baltimore and worked with his father until 1799. That year he married Miss Sarah Owens and they came to Hagerstown. He became a leading merchant and was connected with the Hagerstown Bank.
He and Sarah were the parents of nine children. Alexander 2nd was born in December in 1808. He was a prominent lawyer in Hagerstown for many years. He married Miss Mary Sim Nelson. She was the daughter of John Nelson, attorney general of the United States. She was grandniece of Commander William Burrows, famous in the War of 1812. [This was William Burrows Jr., son of William Ward Burrows, her grandfather] They had eight children. Neill was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church. He died about 1854 [1859].
Alexander Neill 3rd was born in Hagerstown in 1844. He attended St. James School and graduated in 1863. He studied law with his father until the latter's death, then continued his study with William Moter [sic, not legible]. He was admitted to the Washington County Bar in 1865. He married Miss Elllen Loughridge, daughter of William Loughridge, inventor of the airbrake.
Alexander 3rd became a director in the Hagerstown Bank in 18?3 [1863 or 83 not legible]. In 1886 he was made attorney for the bank and in 1893 he was elected its president.
He was a member of the State Legislature, school commissioner, auditor of Washington County Court. He was a director of the Washington Co. Insurance Company and of the Water Company. He was treasurer and director of the Hagerstown and Sharpsburg Turnpike Co. and treasurer of the Hagerstown and Middleburg Turnpike Co.
In 1906 he became president of the Maryland Banker's Association. He was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church.
So Long,

Alexander Neill was married to Sarah "Sally" Owen December 9, 1800, by Rev. Bowen. He was a leading merchant in Hagerstown and President of the Bank of Hagerstown after 1800. He was elected Sheriff of Washington County 1824-1827. He was an "old line wig" and actively interested in municipal affairs.

The following letter was written by Alexander Neill, and was published in the book: "John Neill of Lewes, Delaware, 1739 and his descendants":

"Hagerstown, Maryland, June 3d, 1848; My father, William Neill, with his brother Thomas (the father of Lewis Neill, formerly a merchant of your city) emigrated from either the county Down or Antrim, between the years of 1760 and '70. My father settled as a merchant in the city of Baltimore, where he died about the year 1786, leaving me an infant aged about eight years. Being thus early deprived of the parental guardianship of one of the most estimable of men, I must attribute to that melancholy event the cause of my ignorance of the history of my ancestry. Some years ago I had two cousins living in Belfast, their maiden names were Stewart and Brown; not having any tidings from them for the last seven years, I am apprehensive they cannot now be counted among the living of this world. Some five years ago, when on a visit to Baltimore, I met with a gentleman of our name (Neill); we fortunately put up at the same hotel; on ascertaining we were of the same name, an intimacy and evidently a kind feeling followed our acquaintance; during our intercourse I ascertained he was as myself the descendant of an Irishman, and that his father emigrated from the county of Antrim, that he as well as myself were members of the Presbyterian Church, and before we parted we concluded that our families must have descended from the same ancestors. We ascertained that we had been residing for nearly forty years within the distance of thirty miles of each other, and both regretted that an acquaintance had not been formed at an earlier period. On our parting we promised to visit each other, but shortly afterward, I heard of his death; his family are represented as very respectable and interesting; his name was Lewis Neill. I cannot remember the Christian name of his father. It was quite unnecessary that you should have applied to our mutual friend Dr. Gibson for an introduction; although I have not the pleasure of knowing you personally, I have long known you from character, particularly through my cousin, the late Lewis Neill, and the Rev. Dr. Cathcart, of York.
With sentiments of great regard,
Your obedient servant,
(signed) Alexander Neill"
