Sheriff of Mineral County Is Dead

This entire community was sadly shocked when the word came from Del Norte that T. J. Cunningham, their sheriff, has passed away following an operation for appendicitis.
Mr. Cunningham was taken ill last Friday but his symptoms were not considered serious as it was that he had merely an attack of acute indigestion. However, Monday Dr. R. J. Day of Del Norte was called in consultation and it was decided to take him to Del Monte on the evening train for an operation. The next morning the operation was performed and the appendix found to be ruptured. Peritonitis quickly set in at 3:30 that day.
T. J. Cunningham or "Tom" as everyone called him, was born in Russelville, Laurence County, Ill., April the 29th, 1850, making him 69 years, 10 months and 26 days old at the time of his death. He came to Colorado nearly 40 years ago and at one time was assessor of Pitkin County. It was in Aspen that he married his wife, then Eva Lees, thirty-one years ago. They came to Creede in 1892, afterwards residing in Lake City for two years, and then returning to Creede about 16 years ago. He was a member of the Woodman of the World and was serving his second term as sheriff of this county when he died.
Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Bessie Humphries of Sissonville, West Virginia and a brother, Abner Cunningham in Illinois. His father-in-law, John Lees and two brother-in-laws, Chas and Roy Lees, live here and are a great comfort to Mrs. Cunningham in her affliction. It will be a sad blow to the daughter, Bessie, as she and her husband were here on a visit little over a month ago, and now she is so far away.
"Tom" Cunningham was a good husband and kind father. He had few enemies and many friends. He did his duty as an officer regardless of consequences and was always fair and square with everyone. This entire community will miss him and joins The Candle in extending to the sorrowing ones their most heart felt sympathy in dark hour of their bereavement.
The funeral will be held from the Congregational church tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. and interment will be in the cemetery.
