Patrick was the son of James Besan and Mary Ann Penton. Patrick married Bertha Bridget Thomas on 21 May 1913 in Grand Falls, Nfld.
On 6 Mar 1916 he enlisted into the Royal Newfoundland Regiment (#2232)
On 14 Apr 1917 he was registered as missing in action.
