He graduated with his bachelor's degree from Cornell College in Iowa and with high honors from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., after which he interned at the Cook County Hospital. He married in Chicago on April 13, 1917 to Miss Frances Adelaide Bulot. He was a Son of the American Revolution through his great, great grandfather, William Markee (Find-A-Grave #6659340, buried at Tippecanoe, Harrison Co., Ohio). He was the father of Ruth (Mills) Syrett, (1918-2005), Mary Frances Nelson, Patrick (1925-2011), and Michael (1929-2008).
