Sioux Falls - Merle Edward Driver, 88, passed away January 20, 2011 in Sanford Hospital Hospice shortly after suffering a stroke. Merle was born in Sioux Falls on February 25, 1922, to Merle and Nettie (Rosenwald) Driver. He attended Hawthorne Elementary School and graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, SD. Merle attended Park College in Kansas City, Kansas and then SDSU in Brookings. Pearl Harbor interrupted his college studies and on December 8, 1941, he went to Sioux Falls and enlisted in the Navy. In the Navy he went to Minot State College, ND for training and then graduated Officers Training School at Northwestern University in Chicago. In Chicago, on Christmas Eve, 1943, Merle secretly married his high school sweetheart, Betty Ann Johnson. Merle served as a Navy Lieutenant on ships (LCI's) in the South Pacific during WWII, participating in many island invasions. After the war, Merle and Betty returned to Sioux Falls and in 1952 Merle bought A.L. Green Monument Works, retiring in 1984. Merle is survived by two daughters, Dee Ann Driver of Georgetown, SC and Candy Driver-Ratigan (Mike Ratigan) Newcastle, WY, and one son, David (Marilee) Driver, 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and his sister, Evelyn. Merle especially enjoyed his involvement and friendships in the Sioux Falls Downtown Lion's Club and the El Riad Shrine Rickshaw Unit. Merle was also a Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, Unity #130. He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 2:00pm until 7:00pm on Monday, January 24, 2011 at Heritage Funeral Home. The family will be present from 4-7pm. A Masonic Service will begin at 7:00pm Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 at 9:30am. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, followed by a luncheon.
