Julia Ann Cross was born on November 14, 1908 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the youngest child of Julia and George Cross. Nicknamed Judy, she attended school in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School and attended South Dakota State College in Brookings. From 1935 until her marriage, she and her brother, Sam, owned Cross Grocery, at which time she sold her interest to him. On May 27, 1939, she married Ernest V. Johnson in Grand Forks, North Dakota. They were married by her brother-in-law, the Rev. William Murray Allan, husband of Judy's sister Ione. Judy was also sister to Neva (Kenneth) Blood, Georgia (Joe) Wolden, Warren (Arley) Cross and Sam (Velma) Cross. Judy and Ernie were blessed with two children who were twins, Linda (Guy Varud) and Michael, two grandchildren, Michelle Dawn (Varud) Nestegard and Kirk Varud, and four great grandchildren, Julia Ann Welding, Emily Welding, Christine Nestegard and Carson Helmer, and one great-great grandson, Logan Welding. Judy was active in the Order of the Rebeccas, the female branch of the Odd Fellows Lodge, and the Wesley Methodist Church. She and her sisters, sisters-in-law, and friends formed a sewing and arts 'n crafts group they simply called "Club." Judy and Ernie lived in Sioux Falls all their lives. Upon retirement, they spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona where Georgia and Joe, Neva, and Sam also wintered. Summers were spent in Sioux Falls with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and enjoying family get-togethers at Neva's cabin on Lake Madison in South Dakota.
