Ernest V. Johnson was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on December 13, 1907, where he attended school graduating from Washington High School in 1925. On May 27, 1939 he married Julia (Judy) Ann Cross in Grand Forks, North Dakota. They were married by his wife's brother-in-law, Rev. William Murray Allan. Judy's parents, Julia and George Cross and her five siblings welcomed him as part of their close knit family. Judy's siblings were Neva (Kenneth) Blood, Georgia (Joe) Wolden, Ione (Bill) Allan, Warren (Arley) Cross and Sam (Velma) Cross. Ernie and Judy were blessed with twins, Linda (Guy Varud) and Michael, two grandchildren, Michelle Dawn (Varud) Nestegard and Kirk Varud, and four great grandchildren, Julia Ann Welding, Emily Welding, Christine Nestegard and Carson Helmer, and one great grandson, Logan Welding. Ernie was an active member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and the Wesley Methodist Church. Judy and Ernie lived in Sioux Falls all their lives. Upon retirement, they spent winters in Mesa, Arizona, where Georgia and Joe, Neva, and Sam also wintered, summers in Sioux Falls with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and enjoyed family get-togethers and reunions at Neva's cabin on Lake Madison in South Dakota.
