Thomas was bapt. 21 Oct 1862 in the Catholic parish of Tullow, Co. Carlow, Ireland. He was born in the townland of Roscat, civil parish of Ardristan, the son of Michael Aughney and Catherine McDonald. Thomas came to the US in 1882, and married Maria Morrissey about 1885. The family lived at 265 Monmouth St., Jersey City. According to census records, Thomas owned and ran a saloon in Jersey City.
