Emily Jane Cottingham (sometimes misspelled Cottenham) was the daughter of John T. and Sarah (Plough)Cottingham. On census reports she is listed as being deaf. Her father died in 1854 and after her mother's remarriage she accompanied her step-father, John Rogers, her mother, and two brothers, Jacob and William M., on a wagon train westward to California. Family lore has it that Indians attacked the train, killing her brother, Jacob. This must have been very terrifying to one who was unable to hear. She married James Hanney, an English immigrant, on 1/25/1865 in Yolo County, California. The couple were the parents of 7 children: James William, Martha Ann, Amanda Jane, Clara E., George Wesley, Alfred Rosell, and Bertha May. Jane died at Fortuna, CA in 1910 of pneumonia.
