Author, mother and wife, Beulah (Bulah)Tobey Brinton (1836-1928) who is buried in Section 45 at Forest Home Cemetery, was a leader in the social, cultural and educational life of Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood. Beulah developed the model for what social centers would become in Milwaukee; she is considered the mother of our city's recreation centers.

In the 1870s she taught English, cooking, and sewing in her home to women whose husbands worked at the steel mill. She provided recreational activities on her lawn, enrichment programs; and some medical care for families. She organized the community's first public library in her home with over 300 books. Her work with families served as the model for recreation centers that Milwaukee established in the early 1900s.

At one time, a park and a street in Bay View were named for her. In Bay View today, Milwaukee Recreation's only stand-alone community center serving people of all ages, is named in honor of Beulah T. Brinton. Her original home on South Superior Street was designated a historical site in 1983 and is now the location of the Bay View Historical Society.
