Enlisted on 3 August 1861 at Fort Wayne, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan; he was residing at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan prior to enlistment at 20 years of age; mustered in on 28 August 1861, Company D, Michigan 5th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; wounded on 2 July 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg (shot in the left knee); mustered out on 11 September 1863 dying of wound complications in Letterman General Hospital. This tented "hospital" was established near the battlefied at Gettysburg to treat the many wounded.
