Gustav Schultz, another of Bureau county's progressive farmers and good citizens, passed away Monday, April, 21, 1902. Mr. Schultz, was born in Richtenber, Pommern, Germany, Jan. 27, 1830. Until fourteen years of age he attended the schools of his native country. He was then apprenticed to a shoemaker three years, was a journeyman shoemaker three years; after which he served his country in the army for three years.
His father Jacob Schultz died in 1853, and his mother, Mary Goersz Schultz, came to America with her six sons and one daughter, in 1854. Gustav Schultz arrived in Princeton during the latter part of May, 1854. In 1857 he began farming on rental land near this city, but the next year he removed to Iowa, where he purchased land which he farmed for five years. At the end of that time he sold his holding in Iowa ad returned to this county, buying the old Schultz homestead in Bureau township. After residing here three years he again sold out and returned to Iowa, settling in Muscatine county. In 1868 he returned to Bureau county and acquired his present farm in sections 25 and 26.
In Princeton, August 6, 1854, he was married to Miss Mary Hechtner. To them were born four children, to of whom are living, namely, Frederick Schultz, supervisor and substantial farmer of Bureau township, and Mrs. Henrietta Becker, wife of John Becker, also a prominent farmer of Bureau township.
