Essie Mae Kinard was born September 26, 1898 in Colleton County to Isaac Lollis Kinard (June 1863 - 1928) and Laura Florence Smoak Kinard (October abt 1870 - May 18,1936).

Essie was the second wife of Henry Martin Carter.

Essie and Henry had five children: Lillie Mae Carter born April 10, 1917; Mary Lois Carter born March 27, 1919; Linwood Isaac Carter, (Sr.) born May 6, 1921; Etheridge Hamilton Carter born January 27, 1923 and Henry Claire Carter born May 23, 1925.

After the death of Henry, Essie moved to her parents' old homeplace on Straw Pond Road. She lived at this home until her death on August 18, 1943 when she was struck and killed by lighning on the porch of this house.

Essie is buried at Smoak's Baptist Church in Smoaks while her husband Henry is buried next to his first wife Elizabeth in the Bethany Cemetery.

Essie's children remembered her as a hard working woman who had a garden and grew vegetables for the family table.
