VERN ATKINS
Vale - Vern Atkins, 77, Vale, died Oct. 15, 1996, in a Boise hospital following a brief illness. Graveside interment will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Valley View Cemetery, Vale, with Rev. Paul Ratzlaff officiating, under the direction of Lienkaemper Chapel, Vale.
Vern was born Dec. 19, 1918, at Gering, Neb. He served for several years as a fire chief with the Vale Fire Department; served in the Marine Corps during World War II, a former member of the Ontario Elks Lodge and worked numerous years as an independent contractor, and was later employed with the BLM out of Vale as a carpenter until his retirement in 1982. Following retirement, he enjoyed being with his family and spending time in his wood working shop.
Survivors include his wife, Linden of Vale; two sons, Lynn and his wife Carol Atkins of Spokane, Wash., and John and his wife Joyce Atkins of Portland; three daughters, Bobbie and her husband Lonnie Maggard of Parma, Mary Lou and her husband Jim McLaughlin of Alturas, Calif., and Toni and her husband Steve Lamb of Fargo, N. D.; 11 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one brother and two sisters.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity, in care of Lienkaemper Chapel, P.O. Box 970, Ontario, OR 97914.
