Daughter of John Alexander Thompson (abt 1775-1832) and Nancy Harris Thompson of York County, South Carolina, Malinda moved with her brother-in-law John Wright and two nieces, Nancy M. and Cynthia Jane Wright, to Tipton County, Tennessee following her father's death. She became the second wife of Banyan Payne (1800-1878) who had moved to the area about the same time from Morgan County, Alabama. She and Banyan were married in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee on June 15, 1835. They had two children, Dr. John Liewellyn Payne (1837-1894) and Malinda Elizabeth Payne (1839-1888) who would marry Dr. James Elliott Blaydes. Following her daughter's birth, Malinda A. Payne "took to her bed" and basically never recovered her heatlh following childbirth. Her nieces, Nancy and Cynthia Wright ended up taking care of her children and nursing her until she died.
