Iretha Mae Bardwell, 88, of Springfield died at 10:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Heritage Manor.

She was born May 22, 1920, in Paynesville, Mo., the daughter of Eugene and Ida Belle Wheatley Dixon. She married Hurdle Bardwell; he died on Sept. 17, 1979. Also preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Roy Cornell Lewis in 1998; six brothers; and four sisters.

Mrs. Bardwell had lived in Springfield for more than 60 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church for 50 years. She was mother of the church, superintendent of Sunday school, choir member, usher and a member of the Dorcas Missionary Society. She graduated from Cullen School in Paynesville, Mo.

Surviving are four sons, James A. Lewis (Hazel), Robert J. Lewis (Annie), William F. Bardwell and Kenneth E. Bardwell, all of Springfield; three daughters, Idella M. Slater (Leroy), Barbara J. Hamilton and Lois A. Cason, all of Springfield; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; two nephews; a niece; and a cousin.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of services at 12 noon Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Silas Johnson officiating. W.W. White Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
