He was born Aug. 14, 1912, in Waurika, Okla., the fifth of 10 children to Franklin and Eula Alta Smith. After one year at Oklahoma Business College, he married Fern Long. They raised a daughter and two sons.
George worked as a farmer in Oklahoma. He moved to California where he worked in produce. In 1952, George partnered with his brother, Eugene Smith, and brother-in-law, Richard Creswell, and operated a potato packing business in Tulelake for 22 years. Along with five other charter members, George and Fern formed the First Baptist Church of Tulelake.
George and his wife Fern retired to Lucerne, Calif., as well as Clearlake Oaks, Calif., for a total of 39 years. The couple enjoyed their retirement on the lake, fishing, boating, gardening and church work. George was a long-term deacon of the First Baptist Church of Tulelake and Clearlake Oaks. George moved to an assisted living facility in Orangevale, Calif., in 2007, where he spent his remaining years. George dedicated his life to his church and caring for his family.
He is survived by his daughter Velva Smith of Carmichael, Calif., and son Charles Smith of Aiken, S.C., seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and sister Hazel McCombs of Chickasha, Okla. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Fern, and son Jimmie W. Smith.
Services were held on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 11 a.m. at Jones and Lewis Mortuary in Lower Lake, Calif.
