Amos Adams, widely known throughout the city and highly respected as one of the older members of Salem United Brethren Church, died at 1:35 o'clock this afternoon at his home at 1036 Orchard Avenue. He had been in failing health more than a year, but his condition underwent improvement at times and he was then able to be about the house, and a few times during that period was able to be on the street. Just five days ago, however, he suffered from a general relapse and breakdown and medical skill was unavailable in reviving him. Suffering from general debility and a complication of ailments, he merely fell into a peaceful sleep, and with not even a tremor to warn those at his bedside that the end had come, until they noted that he had ceased to breathe. Mr. Adams passed the 77th anniversary of his birthday, on March 4, last. He was born in Lancaster County, but at an early age moved with his parents to the Monroe Valley, where the family resided for a number of years. After working at Fredericksburg a number of years, he came to Lebanon about fifty years ago and resided here ever since. He was a carpenter by occupation and assisted in the construction of many of the buildings in Lebanon. He was a faithful member of the United Brethren church for a period of over fifty years, and during his residence in Lebanon was actively identified with the work of Salem church. He was a good neighbor and friend, and an exemplary Christian and citizen, and the community suffers the loss of a good man in his demise. The deceased was a brother to the late Attorney Jacob G. and Josiah Adams, of this city. He was twice married. Mrs. Annie Reed, of this city, is a daughter of the first marriage and Harry Adams, of this city, and Mall Carrier John Adams are sons of the second marriage. Former District Attorney Paul G. Adams is a nephew. There are also eleven grandchildren. A son, Samuel Adams, was killed in the United States army about seven years ago. Mr. Adams was elected as a city assessor a number of terms and served in that office under the old form of government about twenty years. Later he served at varying terms of court as a tipstaff. He was widely known throughout the city by citizens at large, who admired his gentleman traits. [Lebanon Daily News, July 24, 1918, Page 3]
