She was joined in holy matrimony to Mr. William Lewis Cowardin in Richmond City on 1 December 1841. The service was performed by the Episcopalian clergyman, Rev. George Woodbridge.
God blessed this union with 4 children: John Alonzo Cowardin, William Henry Cowardin, Peter F. Cowardin, and Charles Cowardin. (Charles died in infancy)
Sadly, on 2 July 1849 Delia died at the family home (at the intersection of Leigh and Adams Streets in Richmond City) of typhoid fever, leaving her husband a widower. She was buried the following day, 3 July 1849, in Shockoe Hill Cemetery, 1000 Bates Street.
Photo of Delia Ann Cowardin is from the book Shockoe Hill Cemetery: A Richmond Landmark History by Alyson L. Taylor-White. This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Shockoe Hill Cemetery. ISBN 978-1-4671-1864-4
I am very grateful to be able to look at Delia's face--thank you for sharing that photograph with the world.
Delia's tombstone in Shockoe Cemetery and some of the information provided here is the direct result of the research and kindness of L. Taylor Cowardin.
If anyone knows L. Taylor Cowardin or if he reads this memorial, I would love to know how to contact him in order to express my thanks and to discuss Delia. Please email me.
