Alfred was living in Iowa City by 1860, working as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He married Martha Smith there that year.

He was commissioned Captain of Company "F", 22nd Iowa Infantry on 7 August 1862. He was slightly wounded at the Battle of Third Winchester on 19 September 1864, and more seriously wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek on 19 October 1864. He mustered out with the Regiment at Savannah, Georgia on 25 July 1865.

After the War, Alfred and his family lived in Iowa City. He was active in the 22nd Iowa's regimental association, and with "Old Settlers" events in Johnson County. He belonged to Kirkwood Post #8, Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), in Iowa City. The University of Iowa Libraries has a collection of letters Cree wrote home to his wife during the War.
