Otto Abitz, 71, a retired assistant chief of the city fire department, was found dead in bed at his home at 1014 S. Seventh Ave. this morning. He had apparently died of a heart attack in his sleep. Chief Abitz retired from the department June 1, 1956. For a number of years after his retirement he was custodian in several downtown buildings. He was a well known figure in the city. He joined the fire department Dec. 1, 1931. He was appointed lieutenant or first pipeman Jan, 1, 1937. He was named captain Feb. 1, 1940 and assistant chief Jan. 1, 1950. The body was taken to Helke West Chapel.
