John William Appleman, son of Jesse and Christina Appleman, was born July 16, 1844, in Morgan County, Ohio, died March 20, 1905, at his farm in Clinton Township, near Cashton, Vernon County, Wisconsin, and was buried there in the Bloomingdale Cemetery. His death resulted when he fell from a load of hay and broke his neck. His death certificate stated his father was born in Virginia.

John's first marriage May 26, 1863, to Harriet A. Latimore ended in divorce November 4, 1865. No known children.

On December 28, 1865, at the house of Jesse and Brely Appleman, in the Town of Webster, Vernon County, Wisconsin, John was married by John Griffin, JP, to Sarah Meloy, born in 1845, in Muskingum County, Ohio, daughter of Thomas and Swyeeu Parr. Witnesses to the marriage were Mary Parr and Mary A. Appleman. Sarah was the widow of James Meloy, who died June 10, 1863, at Webster Creek, Vernon County, Wisconsin. She brought one child into the marriage, James W. Meloy, born in 1864, who later lived in Calvisse, South Dakota. She had one known brother, John Parr, who on October 24, 1907, was living in Westby, Vernon County, Wisconsin. John and Sarah's children all born in Wisconsin were:

Of the above children is was known that Ida Jane married Robert Clark and lived in Cashton; Elizabeth married William Donavan and lived in Cashton; Mary Etta married Jasper Norris and lived in Madison, Wisconsin; Clara Lucinda married James Maxwell and lived in Cashton; Olive married Charles Adams and lived in Westby, Wisconsin; Wessie married John Curry and lived in Woodstock; and Charles and Seward lived in the vicinity of Cashton.

John Appleman was a Civil war veteran having served in Company A of the 25th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. On June 26, 1905, his widow Sarah filed for a widow's pension which was subsequently granted. At the time of his death John owned 440 acres of land. 160 acres was located on one side of the Cashton-Bloomindale Road and 240 acres on the other side of this road. Another 40 acres was located in Monroe County, near Cashton.

In the 1870 U.S. Census, John was listed as a 25 year old farmer with $1000 worth of real estate and $300 worth of personal property, living in the Town of Clinton, Vernon County, Wisconsin, with his 25 year old wife Sarah and their children: James, age 6; Ida J., age 3; and 1 year old Elizabeth Appleman.

In the 1880 U.S. Census, John was listed as a 36 year old farmer living in The Town of Clinton, Vernon County, Wisconsin, with his 36 year old wife Sarah and their children: Ida Jane, age 13; Elizabeth E., age 11; Mary E., age 8; Charles H., age 5' Clara L., age 2; and 8 months old Olive L. Appleman. Also living with the family was 16 year of Wisconsin born J. W. Melloy, a stepson, and 20 year old Phillip Pierce, a farm laborer. Both of the latter were born in Wisconsin of parents born in Ohio.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, John W. Appleman, was listed as a 55 year old stock dealer living in the Town of Clinton, Vernon County, Wisconsin, with his 55 year old wife Sarah V. and theor children: Olive L., age 20; Wesie, age 18; and 12 year old Seward C. Appleman. They had been married 35 years, and Sarah was listed as having gave birth to 11 children of whom one was deceased.
