John H. Chichester was the son of George and Margaret Peyton Chichester. Prior to the Civil War he was a farmer in Fairfax County, Virginia. He married Sarah Ellen Dulany, the daughter of Daniel French and Sarah Ann Tingey Dulaney. At the beginning of the Civil War he served as a VADC to General Longstreet at First Manassas and was promoted shortly thereafter to the rank of Major on September 17, 1861. Relieved of duty on November 4, 1862 and order to report to Major Cole at ANVA headquarters. He later served as a Major of Commissary of Subsistence at Gordonsville, VA. He was paroled June 3, 1865. Chichester returned to Fairfax County, Virginia where he remained until his death.
